YOSHITOSHI TSUKIOKA: Koi Pond (1870's and 1880s)

Koi Pond Koi Pond with Wisteria

Yoshitoshi used this group of koi (ornamental carp) in similar prints over his career. It is not unusual to have prints from the same blocks repeated, if they are popular, even beyond the artist's death. I recently ran across a posthumous printing, from the original blocks, attributed to the 1990s. One can see why this design was one of Yoshitoshi's most popular -- the grace of the koi and the overall composition remain elegant regardless of colouring or incidentals.
