Right now, Serbian women are generally stronger than the men. As is often the case with tribal societies -- and the Balkans is an area of tribal societies -- that have sustained a debilitating blow, the women have emerged to do whatever they must to keep families together and find a future for the children and granchildren. Women one passes in the street dress their best, no matter what their situation, and walk with the steely determination personified by this Bubba (Serbian, as well as Yiddish, for Grandmother), probably, by her hair, not too badly off, out shopping for the days supplies.
